TACLOBAN CITY, (PNA) — The city government through the Traffic Operations Management Enforcement and Control Office (TOMECO) will have a dry-run for the new traffic scheme prior its full-swing implementation.
The month-long dry-run starting this Monday was decided after members of the city council instructed the TOMECO to properly study the new traffics scheme.
This new traffic scheme is the reversal of the present system of the city. The current practice of one-way street will now be a two-way street while the two-way street will be revert to one-way traffic.
Jobs Lagutan, information officer of the TOMECO, said that new traffic scheme is important to address the worsening traffic situation in Tacloban.
The frequent changes in the traffic system irked the Sangguniang Panlungsod thus majority of its members set aside the passage of ordinance pending the submission of a report from the TOMECO as to the result of the dry run.
“There are streets in the city that are small like Gomez St. If you will compare to other streets like Burgos and Zamora you will see the difference of its size. Making Gomez St. a two-way street would make the traffic problem even worse,” said Councilor Edwin Chua.
Vice-Mayor Jerry Yaokasin said that traffic management of the city must be supervised by those who are expert in said field and not just by members of the TOMECO who mostly have no proper training and expertise in traffic management.
