TACLOBAN CITY, (PNA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here is taking a proactive stance to be able to readily respond to victims of disaster following the onset of rainy and typhoon months.
This was assured by DSWD regional director for Eastern Visayas Remia Tapispisan as she stated that their agency is “most concerned of the vulnerable families who become totally helpless as they are displaced from their homes and source of livelihood.”
As part of the agency’s preparation and in keeping up with its support role on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Tapispisan said that they have started to preposition family food packs to disaster-prone areas in the region.
These are in towns of Palo, Abuyog, Javier, La Paz, Mahaplag and MacArthur in Leyte; St. Bernard and San Juan in Southern Leyte; Sta. Rita, Tarangnan and Pagsanghan of Samar and Tacloban City.
Each of the areas has been provided with 500 family food packs, good for a day’s consumption for a family of five.
The agency also urged local government units to store food commodities in a safe bodega to avoid spoilage.
Further, any distribution has to be supported by a Relief Distribution Sheet and Family Access Cards.
Meantime, LGUs where goods have been prepositioned may engage in disaster preparations or rehabilitation activities under the food-for-work scheme should there be no disasters that may happen within the year.
Food packs will be provided in exchange for the work that they render.
