Power outages hit several Leyte, N. Samar towns

Posted on October 5, 2013

TACLOBAN CITY, (PNA) — Some parts of Eastern Visayas are scheduled to experience power interruptions this weekend, lasting up to 10 hours due to maintenance activities of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

NGCP said that portions of areas served by the Leyte IV Electric Cooperative (Leyeco IV) will go powerless as the power transmission firm conducts maintenance activity at Hilongos substation, Baybay substation and along Baybay-Tam-is 69kV transmission line.

Power shutdown has started 8 a.m. and will last up to 5 p.m.

“Normal operations will immediately resume after work completion. NGCP customers and the general public are advised to take the necessary preparations and precautions for this scheduled interruption,” the NGCP said.

Leyeco IV with office in Barangay Lamak, Hilongos, Leyte has 61,738 household connections in 245 barangays of Baybay City, Bato, Hindang, Inopocan, Hilongos and Matalom in southwestern part of Leyte province.

Meanwhile, NGCP also announced a 10-hour power interruption in some areas being served by the Northern Samar Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NORSAMELCO) due to maintenance activity along Palanas Cara-Catarman-Bobolosan-Allen 69kV transmission line.

Brownouts will also be experienced from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday in Northern Samar due to repair activities of Catarman-Bobolosan 69kV transmission line.

NORSAMELCO is the lone power utility distributor in 24 municipalities of Northern Samar. The electric cooperative has 57,706 connections as of end of 2012.

The NGCP is a private firm that operates, maintains and develops the country’s transmission network. It acquired the 25-year concession of National Transmission Corp. in 2008.

The firm is in charge of the transmission of high-voltage electricity through power superhighways that involve an interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and other related facilities.
