MANILA, (PNA) — The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) is all set for its next health forum which will tackle anaphylaxis or serious allergic reaction.
According to the PCP, allergic reaction makes the body’s immune system overreact to a normally harmless substance in the environment like latex, foods, insect stings or medications.
“Typically, the symptoms occur locally but some people are vulnerable to a much more serious anaphylactic reaction,” the PCP stated.
“Anaphylaxis is an alarming emergency situation which may lead to death within a short period of time,,” the PCP added.
In spite of mortalities, the PCP explained the condition it is not always recognized and studies may underestimate its incidence. There is reported difficulty to determine its fatality rate since it is often not diagnose.
“Some reasons are absence of historical details from eyewitnesses, incomplete death scene investigations, paucity of specific pathologic findings at post-mortem examination and lack of disease-specific laboratory tests,” the PCP noted.
“The most important requirements in the treatment are early detection, diagnosis and immediate interventions,” it further said.
Together with the PCP, the Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (PSAAI) is co-presenter of the regular discussion.
It will be held at Annabel’s Restaurant 194 Tomas Morato Ave. cor Scout Delgado St., Quezon City on Oct. 8 at 9:30 a.m.
