THE SAN JUAN City Council is deliberating on a proposed ordinance that will bar the sale and manufacture of fake and pirated goods. Should it be approved, the ordinance will complement national anti-piracy and intellectual property laws. Councilor Dante Santiago, who introduced the bill penalizing the sale, rental, transfer, contribution, manufacture and/or production of pirated and counterfeit goods, said the proposed law aims to protect intellectual property rights by curbing the sale of fake items. Under the bill, which has been passed on first reading, offenders will be fined P2,500 plus face imprisonment of six months. Kristine L. Alave, Philippine Daily Inquirer, April 14, 2008
