DA-3 holds annual mosaic-making contest

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, (PNA)-–The Department of Agriculture (DA) regional office here, in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) and United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (UNO-FAO) held Wednesday an annual on-the-spot mosaic- making competition at the provincial capitol complex here.

This is in line with the celebration of World Food Day 2013 with a theme “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.”

The competition aims to enhance the creativity of students through arts and crafts and at the same time, to promote awareness for food sustainability to eliminate hunger.

Participants were 13 elementary students, who have already undergone eliminations rounds in school, district and division level.

The students used materials that include illustration board, any art medium except oil and water color and a combination of agricultural and fishery products like palay grains, mongo, squash seeds, corn kernels or husks, sea shells or dried seaweed.

Florijean Odiame of Sta. Monica Elementary School bagged first place. Other winners were Samantha G. Orsolino of Sto. Cristo Integrated School of Taralac City, Ric John D. Canlas of Lourdes Elementary School of Minalin, Pampanga, who placed second and third, respectively.

Odiame received P 3,000 cash and will compete at the nationwide poster making contest at Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) in Quezon City on October 11.

Winning mosaics shall be displayed at the DA, DepEd and UN-FAO offices and will be used as designs for the 2013 Christmas cards.
