Water and Flood Management Summit set Oct. 3-4

Posted on October 1, 2013

MANILA, (PNA) — The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) will host a water summit that aims to address and seek solutions to water and flood issues within the Laguna de Bay Region (LdBR) at the Philippine International Convention Center on October 3 to 4.

The summit entitled “The Laguna Lake Water and Flood Management Imperative” will gather various stakeholders of the LdBR to discuss integrated approaches to water and flood management in the Laguna Lake Basin. It will also feature an exhibit of different technologies and projects and best practices of industries and community programs that address the challenges and issues in the Lake Basin.

Participants in the forum include industry owners, business leaders, pollution control practitioners, LGUs and policy makers, civil society and academe, peoples’ organizations, and community representatives such as women, fisherfolks, farmers, and traders.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Sec. Rogelio Singson and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Sec. Butch Abad will grace the event.

In a statement, LLDA General Manager Nereus Acosta underscored the pressing need to get everyone involved in crafting viable and long-term solutions to problems involving water supply and flooding. “Through science-based analysis and approach to solutions, we will be able to come up with ways to promote the sustainable resiliency and adaptive development of the Laguna Lake Basin,” he said.

The conference will serve as a platform to engage stakeholders in collectively creating a roadmap for the climate-smart and adaptive management of the Lake Basin.

Acosta also stressed the urgency of identifying the roles and responsibilities of the key stakeholders in the short, medium and long terms. “We are not just all talk here; there has to be a clear commitment for cooperation and engagement from the stakeholders,” he stated.

The event was organized in collaboration with Women Involved in Nation Building (WIN), a non-profit organization promoting gender equality, disaster risk reduction management and environmental care.
