MOSCOW, (PNA/Itar-Tass) — Awards of the Emergencies Ministry will be presented to more than 4,000 people for fighting the flood in the Far East.
Among them are not only EMERCOM rescuers, but also troops, police and medical personnel of the Health Ministry, who dealt with the flood, helped the population and built dikes, the Emergencies Ministry’s spokeswoman Irina Rossius told Itar-Tass.
Medals are awarded to 1,600 people, and the rest receive badges, insignia and diplomas of the ministry, she said.
Among the medal-awarded people are defenders of Komsomolsk-on-Amur who for several days protected the city from the high water when a storm could break the main protective structure — the Mylka dike.
The operation is unofficially called “the Great Opposition to the Amur”.
Awarding of flood fighters was continuing, Rossius said.
