ILAGAN CITY, Isabela, (PNA) — A Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) ex-officio member wants to ban the use of plastic bags in public markets to avoid future consequences of improper plastic waste disposition.
SP member and Liga ng mga Brangay Federation president Napoleon Hernandez said the use of plastic can cause ecological imbalance once these are improperly disposed.
He said plastic bags and containers when not properly disposed clog canals and other waterways and banning its use in public markets in the province will help eradicate the problem of clogged canals and waterways.
Hernandez said that plastics take several years before these are decomposed.
He suggested the use of alternative bags like paper bags or “bayong” as containers when going to public market to buy goods and commodities.
Hernandez’s proposal is already submitted to the SP for deliberation and possible passage.
Under his proposal, a violator will be fined P1,000 for 1st offense, P2,000 for second offense and P5,000 for third offense and will be jailed for at least six months upon the determination of court.
