Filipino trio head for Hong Kong Int’l Open Chess Championship

MANILA, (PNA) — The triumverate of Roel Abelgas, Marie Antoinette San Diego, and Nelson Villanueva are scheduled to compete in the Hong Kong International Open Chess Championships 2013 on Sept.27-Oct.1 at the University of Hong Kong.

Abelgas, head coach of the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in Dasmarinas, Cavite and San Beda, Alabang, got his 2 IM norms in US$ 100,000 Manny Pacquiao Cup Asian Continental Chess Championship last May.

“We hope to do well in Hong Kong International Open Chess Championships 2013,” said Abelgas, the 2013 Malaysian Chess Festival Blitz Champion last August in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

San Diego, on the other hand, is a member of the victorious Team Philippines that won a total of 65 medals in standard, rapid and blitz events during the 14th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand last June.

San Diego also ruled the Grand Finals of the 2013 National Age-group Chess Championships held at Taguig City Auditorium last April.

Villanueva, meantime is fresh from a runner-up finish in the Sabah Grande Chess Open 2013 held in Sabah, Malaysia last week topped by Filipino IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City.
