MANILA, (PNA) — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Monday advised flood victims stranded in their homes and in need of saving to place a white piece of fabric/blanket on the most visible portion of the house to make it easier for volunteers to see.
PRC has started deploying volunteers and vehicles to aid flood victims in Zambales following continuous rains brought by the southwest monsoon.
Chairman Richard Gordon himself visited Zambales to address humanitarian concerns relating to the ongoing floods in the area.
The PRC’s official Twitter account meanwhile, tweeted some safety reminders for the public including ways to avoid getting leptospirosis and how to tell whether water is safe or not.
“If you are in a low lying area please take precautionary measures. Hot meals will be served to the evacuees tonight in Olongapo City,” the PRC tweeted.
“Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water,” it further said. “Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet.”
“Stay away from flood waters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way,” it added.
It also reminded the public to check disaster supplies, replace or restock as needed and use flashlights in the dark, not candles.
Two teams of PRC volunteers were deployed since early this morning with two 6×6 trucks and plastic boats en route to Olongapo.
The PRC continues to monitor those who are in need of assistance, especially those trapped in their homes, officials said.
