CAIRO, (PNA/Xinhua) — A senior Egyptian police officer was killed Thursday during an operation against a militant hideout on the outskirts of the capital Cairo, official news agency MENA reported.
Egyptian troops and police stormed the village of kerdassah and one senior officer was killed and several others injured in an exchange of fire with militant suspects, the report said.
Fifteen people were arrested and dozens of weapons were seized, including some rocket propelled grenades, state TV reported.
“The security forces will not retreat until kerdassah is cleared of all nests of terrorists and criminals,” said police spokesman Hany Abdel Latif.
Last month, 11 policemen were killed in a militant attack on the village’s police station.
Egyptian police have launched consecutive operations in the village in a bid to restore stability in the Islamist-dominated area since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in early July.
