MOSCOW, (PNA/Xinhua) — U.S. senator John McCain has been offered an opportunity to write an op-ed for a Russian newspaper, local media reported Saturday.
Russia’s Communist Party newspaper, the Pravda, has agreed to publish an opinion piece by McCain following President Vladimir Putin’s op-ed on Syria in the New York Times earlier this week, RIA Novosti news agency reported.
During a Thursday interview with CNN, McCain slammed the article written by Putin criticizing the planned U.S. military strike on Syria, saying he would love to write a commentary in Pravda.
The Republican senator has long been advocating a military solution against Syria.
The Foreign Policy magazine’s blog later sent McCain’s request to Pravda and received a positive response from the newspaper.
“If John McCain wants to write something for us, he is welcome,” Dmitry Sudakov, English editor of the newspaper said.
Though the paper didn’t buy McCain’s idea on Russia and international politics, it would be happy to publish a story by “such a prominent politician,” Sudakov noted.
According to the Foreign Policy, McCain’s office promised to submit the article next week with both English and Russian versions to ensure the accuracy of translation.
Support for authorizing a military strike against Syria did not pick up in U.S. Congress Thursday, which could mean the Obama administration need to spend more time and political capital persuading the undecided lawmakers as well as the war-weary American public.
