TACLOBAN CITY, (PNA) –Radio and television broadcasters belonging to the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) Tacloban Chapter were at the frontline Saturday with various groups in planting more than a thousand mangrove propagules in Barangay Malibago, Babatngon, Leyte.
The “KBP Broadcastreeing 2013: Urban Greening” also brought in representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police, university students, non-government organizations and other volunteer groups.
“Broadcastreeing” is KBP’s part in the National Greening Program, where environment-conscious Filipinos are asked to plant at least 10 seedlings in the next six years to achieve the government’s goal of millions of trees in the near future, helping reduce global warming and address climate change.
DENR-8 regional executive director Manolito Ragub lauded the activity and said the mangrove trees planted will be of great help in preserving the environment for future generations.
“We are assured that the trees that will be planted will be maintained by the barangay since this is also their commitment under the NGP,” Ragud added.
For this year, mangrove area in Barangay Malibago was identified as planting site of the Oplan Broadcastreeing.
The area is a 10-hectare contracted to the barangay local government unit under the National Greening Program.
The planted propagules will be maintained by the barangay local government unit of Malibago.
