MMDA stakes 1M Cleanest and Best Barangay in Solid Waste Management

The powerful wind of environmentalism is blowing in the City of San Juan and across the metropolis.
San Juan city mayor Guia G. Gomez who is a staunch environmental advocate, rallied all barangay councils to joins hands and support the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) clean and green project called “Barangay Power 2012 Malinis Kanais-nais – Search for the Barangay with the Cleanest and Best in Solid Waste Management”.
Last March 26, MMDA Undersecretary Corazon Jimenez announced that a staggering amount of 4M in total prizes await the cleanest and best in solid waste management barangays in Metro Manila during the official launch of the project in San Juan City held at the Pinaglabanan Elementary School Interim Division conference hall.
There are 4 categories in the search depending on the size of the population of each barangay wherein each category will receive P1M cash prize plus a plaque of recognition per category.
All 1,705 barangays in Metro Manila will vie for the said award without the need for nomination. Full contest mechanics were distributed to the barangays. The winners will be announced on November 7.
Present during the project launch were DILG San Juan Director Pura Lito, Barangay Operations Center ICO Walter Pangilinan, CENRO Head Dante Santiago, PID Head Grace Cortez and the 21 barangay chairpersons who showed their enthusiasm in getting the award for their respective barangays.
Brgy. Chairman Raymundo Jucutan, of Brgy. San Perfecto, said he plans to organize a search for the cleanest street in their barangay to mobilize the residents in maintaining the cleanliness in their streets. Meanwhile, Annie Rozon, Brgy Chairperson of Maytunas, will set a meeting with her council to plan out their cleanliness program.
The barangay chairpersons vowed to give their best efforts to win the award and make Mayor Guia G. Gomez and San Juan City proud to be named as the MMDA’s cleanest barangay and best in solid waste management in Metro Manila.CENRO head Dante Santiago pledged the all-out support of his office and staff to assist the barangay councils in the contest.
“During our regular City solid Waste Management board meetings CENRO has conducted a number of seminars among barangay chairpersons and kagawads pertaining to the protection and preservation of the environment especially on RA 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and we hope that this will be put into good use, now and in the following years,” Santiago said.
