BAGUIO CITY, Dec. 7 (PNA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) Baguio City Schools Division will be able to comply with the K -12 Curriculum with the opening of the Senior High School Program (SHSP) for School Year 2016 – 2017.
Assistant City Schools Division Head Agustin Laban, on Monday, December 7, said seven public high schools have been identified to offer the SHSP or Grades 11 and 12 starting 2016.
There are 21 public high schools in Baguio City including Baguio City National High School (BCNHS), Irisan National High School (INHS), San Vicente National High School (SVNHS), Mil-an National High School (MNHS), Joaquin Smith National High School (JSNHS), Guisad Valley National High School (GVNHS) and Sto. Tomas National High School (STNHS) tapped to offer SHSP.
Laban said DepEd can accommodate 60 percent of students graduating from public junior high schools for the senior high school program.
The remaining 40 percent can enroll in various private schools and colleges with financial assistance from the Department amounting to PhP20,000 per student.
Graduates from private junior high schools can also avail of the assistance from the DepEd amounting to PhP16,000.
Laban said major tertiary and technical-vocational schools in Baguio City are eligible to offer SHSP including Saint Louis University (SLU), University of Baguio (UB), University of the Cordilleras (UC), Easter College (EC), Systems Technology Institute (STI), Amable Mendoza Aguiluz Computer College (AMACC).
Senior High School is “two years of in-depth specialization for students depending on the occupancy or career track they wish to pursue.”
“Two years of senior high school intends to provide for students to consolidate acquired academic skills and competency skills and competencies relevant to the job market.”
The senior high school curriculum offers four academic tracks for the students to choose from – academic, technical-vocational-livelihood, sports and arts and designs.
Under the academic track are “strands” which include Accountancy, Business and management (ABM); Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) and General Academic Strand (GAS).
Strands under the Tech-Voc-Livelihood track are Information and Communications (ICT), Industrial Arts, home Economics and Agri-Fishery Arts.
The sports track centers on sports and fitness while the arts and designs include strands on music, dance, film/media, visual arts, indigenous and theater arts. (PNA)
