MANILA, Oct 28 (PNA) — Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) clinched the first runners-up award in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category of the 2015 ASEAN Energy Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The company won for its reef rehabilitation efforts in Semirara Island.
SMPC’s reef rehabilitation program involved the spawning and reseeding of endangered giant clams, through its Marine Hatchery Laboratory.
Reseeded giant clams promote diversity where they live as they attract corals, fishes and smaller marine biota. These giant clams also clean their environment when they sip in seawater for food and then release clean, clear water back to the sea.
The ASEAN Energy Awards is Southeast Asia’s prestigious annual awards program that recognizes outstanding work for excellence, creativity, practicality and dedication to a cause in the field of energy.
In 2013, SMPC earned second runners-up honors in the same category for its 5Es Program, which aimed to uplift living conditions in Semirara Island through education, employment, environmental stewardship, economic empowerment and electrification. (PNA)
