DAVAO CITY, Sept. 17 (PNA) — The city’s Central 911 Emergency Center is on alert as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released an advisory for a potential tsunami as a result of the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile Thursday.
The chief of Central 911, Emmanuel Jaldon, disclosed that emergency teams are on standby. While he does not expect destructive waves if tsunami reaches Davao, he said they are not taking chances.
Jaldon also said they are following the protocols on alert status and corresponding actions will be executed.
In the advisory of Phivolcs, the residents of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur and other provinces were advised to wait and listen for potential tsunami as an effect of the Chile earthquake. The waves might reach Davao Region thus Dabawenyos are advised to wait for further notice.
Central 911, is a city facility functioning both as a call and dispatch center that will link the residents needing assistance with the emergency resources of the government – the police; firefighters; medical workers; and rescue services. The numbers 9-1-1 was selected as the access number to the facility. Davao City is the third locality in the world that utilizes 911 as its emergency number, next only to the United States and Canada. (PNA)
