MANILA, Aug. 20 (PNA) — Thirty-two years since the death of former opposition Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., the Filipino nation is set to remember and honor him at the very airport where he was assassinated on August 21, 1983.
The commemoration ceremony will be held at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 on Friday.
“Ninoy Aquino Day” is a special non-working holiday nationwide pursuant to Republic Act No. 9265 to honor Aquino’s contributions to freedom and democracy.
Part of the event will be a wreath-laying ceremony at NAIA Terminal 1, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
This will be followed by the awarding of the Ninoy Aquino Medal of Valor to notable people by the Ninoy Aquino Movement.
Another wreath-laying ceremony will also take place at Terminal 3 afterwards, MIAA added.
The assassinated former senator was the husband of the late former President Corazon C. Aquino and the father of current President Benigno S. Aquino III. (PNA)
