TACLOBAN CITY, Aug. 15 (PNA) — The Parole and Probation Administration (PPA) in Ormoc City has recently marked the 39th anniversary of the agency with a disaster preparedness seminar and mangrove tree planting activity in this city.
“Why did we pursue in having a mangrove tree planting even before the release of the theme for this year. Actually the office started this project since 2013. We have undertaken two mangrove tree planting last year in coordination with the local DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) in Ormoc City,” disclosed Nelida M. Palconite, chief parole and probation officer in Ormoc.
“It was agreed that they will provide the seedlings and motorboats with a navigator or driver and our office the manpower through our clients,” she added.
According to Palconite, there is an urgent need for the public to support similar activity considering the “significant contribution” of the mangroves to the environment.
“We were able to plant 4,500 of miape, bongalon and bachaw in a three-hectare area. The seedlings were provided by the local DENR thru the leadership of Victoria Entero. Thirty motorboats were also provided to cross the mangrove area,” said Palconite.
During their disaster preparedness seminar, Palconite expressed thanks for their facilitator Marvin Reynes, a representative from the Ormoc City Disaster Risk Reduction Management.
“He discussed measures on how to prevent injuries during disasters both man-made and fortuitous events. The information is so vital that it coincides also with the National Disaster Month,” said Palconite in a statement. (PNA)
