DTI, BOI to conduct industry roadmap localization for competitiveness

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna Aug. 5 (PNA) — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Board of Investments (BOI) will hold the “Industry Roadmaps and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Game Plan: Regional Roadmaps for Competitiveness” at the Tagaytay Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City on August 6.

The conference will be attended by representatives of the region’s chambers of commerce, business support organizations, the academe, government agencies and local governments, non-government organizations and consumer groups.

The conference aims to update stakeholders on industry development initiatives of the government and the new industrial policy to sustain current economic growth; the considerable opportunities resulting from the ASEAN Economic Integration and availing the benefits granted of the European Union’s Generalized System of Preferences Plus (EU GSP+); and motivate the local stakeholders to look at their regional development plans and facilitate the alignment of regional plans with national strategies.

There will be presentations and discussions on the country’s new industrial policy for national competitiveness, the potentials and challenges for industry development in the region, and the integration of green initiatives in the industry roadmap particularly in the automotive, electronics, petrochemicals, and IT-BPM industries.

Dr. Cielito R. Habito, former Director-General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and currently Chief of Party of the USAID’s Trade-Related Assistance for Development Project, will present the vision on regional integration and the National Development Agenda while Luis G. Banua of NEDA in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces) will bare the region’s potentials and challenges.

Rommel Gutierrez (Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc), Dan Lachica (Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines, Inc.), Homer Maranan (Association of Petrochemical Manufacturers of the Philippines), and Geraldine Inocencio Marcial (Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines) will each present the roadmap of the automotive, electronics, petrochemicals, and the IT-BPM industries, respectively .

The new Philippine Industrial Policy for More Competitive Regional Economies will be elaborated by DTI Assistant Secretary Dr. Rafaelita M. Aldaba while Director Senen Perlada of DTI’s Export Marketing Bureau will explain how our economy can capitalize on the EU GSP+.

Dr. Bernd Gutterer, an expert commissioned by the German International Cooperation-Promotion of Green Economic Development (GIZ-ProGED), will introduce greening philosophies and their integration to the industry roadmaps.

Adrian S. Cristobal Jr., DTI Undersecretary for industry development and concurrent Managing Head of the BOI, and Zenaida Cuison-Maglaya, DTI Undersecretary for regional operations, will deliver keynote messages.

Similar conferences have been held in the cities of Iloilo (Region VI), Cebu (Region VII), Davao (Region XII) and Baguio (CAR). (PNA)
