‘Yolanda’-hit town mayor supports Roxas’ presidential bid

Posted on July 31, 2015

TACLOBAN CITY, July 31 (PNA) -– The mayor of the town where super typhoon “Yolanda” made its first landfall has announced his support to the presidential bid of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas.

Guiuan, Eastern Samar Mayor Christopher Sheen Gonzalez has endorsed Roxas as his way of showing gratitude to the DILG chief who helped their town recover from the destruction caused by “Yolanda”.

A Nacionalista Party member, Gonzalez said that Roxas never looked at political affiliation in helping local government units.

Gonzalez said he is aware that Roxas had a misunderstanding with the local chief executive of the regional capital of Tacloban, but he stressed that in other parts of Eastern Visayas, the secretary has good relationship with local officials.

Guiuan received more than PHP200 million as Reconstruction Assistance on Yolanda (RAY) fund from the DILG for the construction of new town hall and public market.

The town is also a recipient of RAY 2 funds for the repair of village structures and RAY 3 funds for the repair of public terminal.

“As DILG secretary, he is very approachable. He is hands on to his job in helping LGUs and if he can do that as DILG chief, how much more if he becomes the president,” Gonzalez added.

He said that sustaining and continuing good programs of the government especially in fighting corruptions through “Daang Matuwid” needs somebody like Roxas who’s a trusted ally of President Benigno Aquino III.

Although he is supporting Roxas’ presidential bid, Gonzalez said that he will not change his political party in the 2016 election.

Gonzalez is optimistic that with the President’s endorsement, Roxas will increase his ranking in future surveys. (PNA)
