DSWD continues relief aid to ‘Habagat’ evacuees

Posted on July 22, 2015

MANILA, July 22 (PNA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Wednesday it continues to provide relief assistance to families in the provinces affected by rains and flash floods caused by the southwest monsoon or “hangin habagat.”

According to DSWD Secretary Corazon J. Soliman, about PhP20,627,982.95 worth of relief assistance has been provided to the “habagat” evacuees as of July 21.

From the said amount, PhP19,021,674.55 was provided by DSWD to the local government units (LGUs) as an augmentation.

Concerned LGUs, on the other hand, have extended relief assistance worth PhP1,600,823.40.

A number of non-government organizations (NGOs) also provided assistance worth PhP5,485.

Soliman said the latest recipients of the relief assistance were evacuees staying in the 11 evacuation centers being managed by LGUs in Regions I (Ilocos), III (Central Luzon), IV-A (Calabarzon or Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

At least 374 families equivalent to 1,738 persons are still staying in these evacuation centers.

In Central Luzon, 4,850 families or 22,939 persons in 17 municipalities in five provinces were flooded as a result of the heavy rains.

Disaster teams of DSWD in the affected regions continue to coordinate with LGUs for further relief augmentation based on the ongoing assessment of the other needs of the affected families. (PNA)
