Carigara, Leyte marks 420th fiesta

CARIGARA, Leyte, July 14 (PNA) — The celebration of 420th feast of the Holy Cross of Carigara, Leyte centers on unity as it is the theme for this year’s celebration, said Town Mayor Eduardo C. Ong.

On Monday, Leyte Governor Leopolodo Dominico Petilla’s medical caravan was held at the town’s gymnasium for the benefit of townsfolk, who availed of free medical check-up and free medicines.

On Tuesday, the local government held a “rumba (race) on Carigara Bay,” a jetski competition open for all participants from nearby cities of Ormoc and Cebu. Another water sports event, “bankarera”, is also open for the local fisherfolk.

On Wednesday, a social gathering of all the village officials, department heads, employees, town officials, representatives of national offices, church and guests will celebrate during the vesper’s night to be held at the town’s gym.

Palo Archbishop John Du will officiate the vesper’s mass at Holy Cross Parish Church at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the town’s fiesta day, will be held the “Kalsada ni Gara” where the major streets of Carigara is divided into 24 segments with assigned village that will design the streets with arcs to bring the mood into a fiesta celebration.

A pontifical concelebrated mass at 9 a.m. will be officiated by Bishop Filomino Bactol and a lunch will be served in the municipal hall.

Mayor Ong vowed to continue all the programs he started since July 2013 for he believed that the town has been on on track with all the development. The local revenue has been steadily increasing 15 to 20 percent every year.

There was also an significant increase in the number of business establishments that recently opened and will soon open in their town, to include three gasoline stations, Mercury Drug, Prince Mall and Banco de Oro (BDO).

He also pushed for the unity of all the sectors in town as he believed that “when people are united, they are happier and more productive.” (PNA)
