ILOILO CITY, July 4 (PNA) -– The government’s biggest irrigation project outside of Luzon is definitely safe from the earthquake and will not affect the Php 11.2-billion Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project II(JRMPP II) currently being constructed in the mountain area of Calinog, Iloilo.
The river irrigation project is at a safe distance from the faultline and possible ground rupture of more than 12 kilometers and definitely safe, the Philvolcs chief reiterated during the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RRRMC) 2nd quarter regular meeting and forum on earthquake, earthquake hazards and preparedness held July 3 in this city.
Director Renato Solidum of Philvolcs said the project engineers have assured safety and better construction materials for JRMPP II so as to benefit farmers of 21 municipalities of Iloilo, generate 17,000 jobs and assure additional bulk water and power supply.
Solidum assured the project area is safe and not covered by the West Panay faultline feared by oppositors to the government project. If there is a rupture, it could only be less than a kilometer, he added. (PNA)
