How to Resolve ‘Invalid node structure’ Error in Mac OS X

Posted on November 17, 2009

HFS+ or HFS Plus is a reliable and widely used file system of Mac OS X operating system. The file system is made up of a number of components and Catalog File is the most important among them. Catalog File keeps record of all the files and directories. This is a B-tree that is divided in fixed-size nodes that are 4 KB in size. Generally four types of nodes are used: Leaf nodes, Header node, Index nodes and Map nodes.

The Header node is placed in starting to reference all other nodes. In some situations, these nodes might get damaged and your system reports inconsistency problems that leads to volume corruption and finally data loss. In such cases, Mac Data Recovery is required to get your mission-critical data back.

In a practical scenario, when you try to check integrity and consistency of your HFS+ file system volume on Mac OS X hard drive using Disk Utility, you might come across below error message:

“Invalid node structure”

The structure of nodes is common in all file systems. It has three components including node descriptors, list of record offsets and list of records. Any damage to this structure might lead to node corruption and data loss. To sort out this problem, perform Mac Recovery by following these steps:

Start your system in single user mode and run fsck or Disk Utility to repair damaged tree.

If it does not work, use third-party disk repair applications.

When all else fails, preform Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X to replace damaged volume structure. But this procedure is not safe from data point of view. It removes all of your valuable data from your Mac OS X hard drive and cause critical data loss situations.

When data loss occurs, you need to restore data from backup. If the backup is not available or it is damaged, Mac File Recovery is required. Recovery is best possible using third-party applications, known as Mac Recovery Software.

The tools retrieve data by systematically scanning the affected Mac hard drive using advanced scanning techniques. The software are very easy to use with rich graphical user interface and thus do not demand sound and prior technical skills. They do not alter original data on the hard drive as they have read-only conduct.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is capable of effectively handling all of data loss situations. It recovers data from all HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper and FAT file system volumes. The software is designed for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.5, 10.4 and 10.3.9.
