NEW DELHI, April 26 (PNA/Sputnik) — According to the India Times television channel, the number of casualties has reached 2,200 following a series of aftershocks.
More than 4,700 people have reportedly been injured.
The 7.8 magnitude quake occurred Saturday morning around 51 miles northwest of Kathmandu, causing extreme massive damage in the region. The disaster triggered avalanches on Mount Everest, as well as tremors in neighboring areas of India, Bangladesh and Tibet.
Several countries have offered assistance to Nepal following the natural disaster. The Russian emergencies ministry stated earlier Sunday that it would send teams of rescuers, doctors and psychologists to the earthquake-stricken country.
More than 6.6 million people reside in areas affected by the earthquake, according to the United Nations. (PNA/Sputnik)
