MANILA, April 20 (PNA) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday said that there is no tsunami threat in the country after a magnitude-6.6 quake struck Japan on Monday.
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said that the strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 occurred at South Western Ryukyu Islands Japan on Monday (April 20) at 9:43 a.m. (Philippine Standard Time) located at 23.9 oN, 122.3 oE with depth of 1 km.
The agency added that no destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data.
However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the epicenter.
“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs stressed. (PNA)
