CEBU CITY, April 6 (PNA) — The Cebu City government will save at least P740 million in scholarship funds with the implementation of the K to 12 program.
Cebu City Councilor Alvin Dizon, chairman of the Cebu City Council’s committee on education, said this is because there will be no high school graduates moving to college in 2016 and 2017.
Dizon said the addition of two years in the secondary education means the city won’t send first year college scholars for two years under the five-year-old program.
Each scholar of the city gets P10,000 per semester.
Dizon said the city is appropriating P370 million a year for the scholarship program.
Dizon said the expected savings will alow the city to increase the grant for city scholars starting next year.
“I am contemplating of filing an ordinance increasing the subsidy for our scholars especially those who will enroll in private institutions,” Dizon said.
Dizon said the City Council’s Committee on Education will hold a series of public consultations this year on this matter.
In a public hearing last year, parents of scholars and scholarship coordinators said the P10,000 grant was insufficient, especially if the student was enrolled in a private school. (PNA)
