Using Convert.exe Might Cause Partition Loss in Windows XP

Posted on September 1, 2009

Microsoft Windows XP operating system supports two hard drive file systems: NTFS (New Technology File System) and FAT (File Allocation Table). NTFS is more advanced than FAT and thus provides high performance. To avail benefits of high performance, several users convert a FAT hard drive into NTFS hard drive.

In some cases, the conversion process can not complete successfully and the original file system gets messed up and the new one could not be written complete. It renders all of the hard drive partitions inaccessible and cause critical partition loss situations. In order to overcome such issue, you are required to go for Partition Recovery solutions.

For converting the file system from FAT to NTFS, Microsoft Windows XP includes Convert.exe tool. This is an easy to use utility, but are some restriction, which you are recommended to consider prior to apply this tool. Before converting your file system, go through the following things:

The file system conversion is one-way procedure. After converting your file system from FAT to NTFS, you could not convert it back to FAT. In order to restore drive as FAT, you will have to format it as FAT that removes all the hard drive partitions and cause complete partition loss.

Uninstalling Microsoft Windows XP to revert to Microsoft Windows 98 or to Microsoft Windows ME (Millennium Edition) is not possible after converting the file system from FAT to NTFS.

You could not convert the boot partition of the RISC based computer to NTFS. ARC specification needs the system partition to be FAT. This is possible to create small FAT partition for system partition and then install Microsoft Windows on NTFS partition.

Convert.exe tool needs that a fixed amount of free space should be present on drive for converting the file system.

In these situations, there are strong chances of partition loss and then data loss. In order to prevent such situations, you should backup all of your data before trying to convert the file system. If you do not create backup or the backup fails to restore, partition loss occurs that require Partition Recovery to be fixed.

The Partition Recovery Software use extremely advanced scanning algorithms to efficiently scan the affected hard drive and retrieve all of the lost partitions. They have interactive and simple graphical user interface. These Partition Recovery Software use read-only and non destructive conduct to carry out safe recovery.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most advanced and effective software to recover lost Windows hard drive partitions. It supports recovery of FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system partitions. This software is designed for Windows 7 RC1, Vista, 2003, XP and 2000.
