Leyte town pushes for more women, child-friendly programs

Posted on March 17, 2015

SAN MIGUEL, Leyte, March 17 (PNA) — The local government here vowed to push for more programs that would benefit women and children, citing their role to the town’s 98 years of development.

Mayor Cheeryl Enrica L. Esperas said that town folks should realize the role of women and children for the development of their town, that was once part of nearby Alangalang town until March 10, 1917.

“We also try to take care of our culture and heritage and preserve whatever it is that our history has. This town would not be what we are now without the contribution of women and inspiration children,” Esperas told reporters on Monday.

The local government has been supporting various national government programs designed to empower men. These include mother’s class to raise the awareness of women on nutrition program, orientation on women’s rights, and empowering women through family development session.

The town also launched various activities to celebrate the National Women’s Month.

Days before the town’s founding anniversary on March 10, the LGU launched activities widely participated in by women. These were mass wedding, tree planting, launching of vegetable farming, pap smear, and intrauterine device (IUD) insertion.

The celebration also reminded the people of San Miguel of their history, culture and government’s thrust.

As the municipality now moves towards its 99th founding anniversary, the town focuses its effort in the development of women and children.

Last week, the town held its first ever education summit in partnership with the Department of Education. The gathering gives honor to young achievers.

The mayor and other key local government officials visited several day care centers and distributed toothpaste and toothbrush to each learner. She also turned over tables and chairs for learners in partnership with UNICEF. (PNA)
