BACOLOD CITY, March 16 (PNA) — Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he supports a federal form of government, but admitted that the shift will not be easy for the country.
The governor shared his stand after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte discussed federalism, peace and order, and industrialism during his recent visit in this city.
“Ever since, I’m in favor of federalism,” Marañon said, adding that neighboring countries like Malaysia and India also have a federal government.
However, the governor also expressed his apprehension.“To change (our form of government) is a big problem. We have to change our constitution,” he said.
According to federalism advocates, federal Philippines means that a measure of the chief executive’s power – like the control of tax revenues, designation of official languages – is devolved to the regions and provinces to allow them the freedom to effectively administer themselves under the ultimate power of the central government.
Marañon said that some members of Duterte’s team paid a courtesy visit on him and they have not confirmed that Duterte will be running for president.
“He may just be testing the waters and see his chances of winning,” he said.
Marañon said he believes that the presidency is a destiny.(PNA)
