PHILIPPINE NEWS SERVICE — A MONUMENT of former President Corazon Aquino, who died early this month, will rise at the Rizal Park.
President Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the National Historical Institute to oversee the construction of the monument, which is expected to be finished within six months.
Deputy Presidential Spokesman Anthony Golez disclosed the President’s directive on the eve of the commemoration of the 26th death anniversary of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr.
“With this monument, our nation will honor for posterity the memory of an extraordinary woman who united our people for one shining week in February 1986 and presided over the rebirth of democracy,” Golez said.
Golez said he was not aware if there have been talks with the Aquino family regarding the construction of the monument. He said it is up to the NHI to determine where in Rizal Park the monument will be built.
Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim will lead today’s commemoration of Ninoy’s death anniversary along with Sen. Noynoy Aquino and friends and supporters of the Aquino clan.
The activity will kick off with a wreath-laying ceremony at Ninoy’s monument at the corner of Burgos Drive and Roxas Boulevard.
Lim said he will personally commission a sculptor to make Cory’s statue beside Ninoy.
Yellow ribbons and streamers will also adorn the city’s major roads.
