ORMOC CITY, March 3 (PNA) — The city council here passed a resolution interposing no objection to an ordinance passed by Barangay (village) Esperanza meant to raise income for the village by imposing toll fees and charges on certain vehicles using public roads in the area.
The council recently approved the ordinance despite the objection of permits, licensing and franchising chief Emilio Tingson.
City councilors reviewed the barangay ordinance as provided for in Section 57 of the Local Government Code (LGC) and found it to be consistent with existing laws and ordinances.
Councilor Bennet Pongos, chairman of the committee on laws and ordinances, said it is only right for the village to impose toll fees and charges to vehicles considering its main road was concreted using barangay funds. Besides, private vehicles will be exempted from paying.
Pongos, who authored the resolution, lauded the initiative of village officials considering that the LGC actually encourages barangays to raise revenues by levying fees, taxes and charges. The income-raising ordinance is also the first of its kind from a village in this city. (PNA)
