File System Structure Corruption and Partition Recovery in Windows

Posted on August 18, 2009

Fragmentation is a common problem with Microsoft Windows operating system. When you save a file on Windows hard drive, it gets fragmented into several parts. Excessive fragmentation of files might decrease the system performance and you need to defragment the hard drive. Windows provides Disk Defragmenter tool for this purpose.

But in some cases, when you run Disk Defragmenter on NTFS partition, ChkDsk might be scheduled to run on restart. It may report you some errors related to damaged file system structure and make your Windows partitions inaccessible, resulting into serious partition loss situations. In order to overcome these issues, Partition Recovery is required.

In a practical scenario, after running Disk Defragmenter on NTFS (New Technology File System) partition, the ChkDsk may scheduled to run on next restart. However, ChkDsk might not find any issue with the partition. When you again run Disk Defragmenter on NTFS partition, ChkDsk might again be scheduled to run on next restart. At this point, Windows System Event log might contain following error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Ntfs
Event Category: Disk
Event ID: 55
Date: date
Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: computer name
Description: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume F:.

In these circumstances, your NTFS file system partition become inaccessible and you need to find out the cause of this issue and go for Partition Recovery by resolving it.

Cause

This issue might be caused by the condition in Windows Disk Defragmenter utility, which may prevent a specific data cluster from being optimized. If Windows Disk Defragmenter utility could not move a specific data element, move is stopped and above error is logged into System Event log and the ChkDsk is scheduled. As stated in the above error message, this issues take place due to corruption to the NTFS file system structure. Thus the hard drive become unusable and ChkDsk can not detect and repair this issue.

In these cases, you should go for Partition Recovery Software. These are efficient third party applications, which use high-end scanning algorithms to thoroughly scan whole hard drive and retrieve all lost, missing and inaccessible partitions. These software are quite easy and safe to carry out absolute recovery in the majority of partition loss cases.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most comprehensive application to ensure perfect recovery of lost Windows partitions. It recovers all FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system partitions. This Partition Recovery Software is compatible with Windows 7 RC1, Vista, 2003, XP and 2000.
