DAGUPAN CITY, Feb. 2 (PNA)– The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned fish farmers in Anda and Bolinao towns to give only moderate amount of feeds to their fish in captivity to prevent the occurrence of a new fish kill in their areas.
BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said the dissolved oxygen in the water of the Caquipotan Channel which separates both towns was noted to have low dissolved oxygen which is a condition of the water when fishkill is on the verge of breaking out.
Domenden said this is already an abnormal situation but since this is the condition of the water there ever since, the fish in captivity may have adjusted a little and may now be used to it.
But he added that if the fish farmers will overfeed their stocks thinking that these will grow faster, a disaster which they will soon regret may happen.
It is because the feeds that will not be consumed by the fish will just drop in the bottom of the water so the chances of fishkill occurring is somewhat great, said Domenden in a talk to mediamen.
The BFAR regional director said the dissolved oxygen in Sual town is higher and where fishkill is unlikely to break out.
To date, the Caquipotan Channel is still teeming with fish cages from where fish farmers raise milkfish.
At the same time, Domemden announced that the red tide advisory in Bolinao and Anda might be lifted in the next few days because the latest water quality monitoring there resulted in negative test for red ride organism anymore.
He said the red tide ban in Alaminos and Bani was lifted earlier because of the improved quality of the water. (PNA)
