KORONADAL CITY, Jan. 19 (PNA) -– A police official who works with the police community relations division of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Region 12 returned P100,000 in cash a bank teller mistakenly handed over to him on January 15.
Police Inspector Rafael Banggay Jr. wanted to prove honesty is a culture within the PNP ranks and that what he did was to serve as model and set an example to everyone.
Banggay said he went to a Land Bank of the Philippines branch in Koronadal City to encash his P100,000 check. He received from the teller one bundle of P100 bills and another bundle of P500 bills.
Both bundles had written amount of P50,000.
Banggay put it in his bag and left casually. He then proceeded to a gasoline station to fill up his vehicle.
Banggay was surprised to find he had a total of P200,000 cash. He said he repeatedly counted the cash and it was P200,000, telling himself in jest “nanganak ang pera ko.”
Since he had to report for duty, Banggay proceeded to Gen. Santos City, where he called up a relative working in the bank to report about the incident.
“I am assigned with the PNP-12 police community relations officer. I should serve as model,” he told Radio Station DXOM-Happy FM in an interview.
He said “What is not mine will never me mine,” adding that he was hoping his act will serve as example for others to emulate.
On the same day, the police officer returned the P100,000 cash to the bank manager where he met with the unidentified teller. The teller was very thankful to Insp. Banggay.
He added the bank management was unaware its teller mistakenly handed him more than the amount of the check he encashed. (PNA)
