BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 17 (PNA) — The Cities for Life second anniversary was marked by the City of Bacolod led by Mayor Monico Puentevella to reiterate the city’s strong opposition against death penalty.
“We are all here tonight to emphasize our struggle and crusade against death penalty,” Puentevella during the commemoration rites held Tuesday night at the lobby of the Bacolod People’s House.
Bacolod is the 16th city in the Philippines to join the global campaign to abolish death penalty as a capital punishment.
Others are the cities of Talisay (Cebu), Bataan, Cavite, Cebu, Iloilo, Mandaluyong, Manila, Quezon Province, Quezon City, Rizal, San Juan, South Cotabato, Zamboanga Sibugay, Davao, and Puerto Prinsesa.
Puentevella said the issue to bring back death penalty as capital punishment is a big issue for Bacolod and that the crusade along with the Church must continue to preserve the dignity of human life.
“Bacolod will remain to be Pro-Life, and we are committed against the imposition of death penalty,” the mayor added.
There are 1,988 cities all over the world that signified its opposition against death penalty while 816 markers were constructed in 95 countries.
The commemoration was held in the wake of Senator Tito Sotto III’s filing of the bill seeking to reimpose death penalty for heinous crime only particularly for cases involving big-time drug trafficking. (PNA)
