Globe pushes for greener cell sites

Posted on December 11, 2014

By Azer N. Parrocha

MANILA, Dec. 11 (PNA) — Telco giant Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) on Thursday said it has equipped majority of its cell sites with various solutions that further strengthen its “ecological drive”.

In a statement, Globe said that it is continuously reducing carbon footprint of its network operations such as in the maintenance of its cell sites by converting its indoor cell sites into outdoor models to reduce air conditioning costs.

Aside from reducing dependency of its cell sites on traditional air conditioning equipment, Globe’s move also entails huge electricity costs.

Globe senior vice president and head of Service Management Division, Network Technical Group Joel Agustin, said that the move was the company’s way of showing its commitment to its environmental sustainability program.

“Our network transformation initiative does not only focus on deploying technologically-advanced solutions for the network but also in becoming more and more an ecologically-responsible organization by operating our business through green and sustainable practices,” Agustin said.

Globe has also installed solar-based power solutions in cell sites with no commercial power those that are purely dependent on fuel.

The telco’s cell sites with high fuel consumption and with frequent power outages were meanwhile provided with alternative energy sources that include deep cycle battery solutions which ensure storage of electricity to prove a reliable source of constant energy.

Some of Globe’s cell sites, identified as most expensive to operate, were equipped with intelligent generator sets that make use of alternative energy sources including solar, wind energy and fuel cells, as applicable.

Recently, Globe has deployed a Facilities Management System, as part of its network modernization initiative, which enables monitoring of energy consumption and environment conditions per regional operations center.

The system allows for remote switch-over to generator sets during commercial power outages, provide real time battery conditions and perform remote charging of batteries and prolong its useful life.

It also helps company personnel in recording network alarms at pre-identified sites before unexpected outages occur. (PNA)
