ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov. 11 (PNA) –- The National Food Authority (NFA) is developing a new type of iron fortificant to continue the distribution of Iron Fortified Rice (IFR) to the public.
NFA provincial manager Gaudencio Nuega said Tuesday the new iron fortificant that is being developed will have similar color of rice.
In the past, Nuega said the public shy away from buying IFR because the rice becomes darker when mixed with iron fortificant.
Nuega said they will resume the distribution of IFR once the new type of iron fortificant is already available.
He said a kilo of iron fortificant is sufficient for a 50-kilo sack of IFR. A kilo of iron fortificant cost Php50.
He said the distribution of IFR is pursuant to RA 8976 that mandates the iron fortification of food products like rice, salt, sugar, flour and oil. (PNA)
