ILOILO CITY, Oct. 14 (PNA) –- The city council here is supporting the project of the Animal Welfare Association (AWA) of Iloilo by expanding the coverage of the Rabies Control Council to be known as the Rabies Control and Animal Welfare Council through an executive order to be issued by city mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Committee on Rules chair, city councilor Joshua Alim, said the expanded council came about after AWA chairperson Anna Marie Grace Rivera-Wharton wrote the city council for support on their goals and projects for CY 2014.
Alim said the expanded council will reactivate the programs on anti-rabies and animal welfare and will similarly ask an allocation from the city mayor’s office for use of the city pound as caretaker of street dogs and other homeless animals.
The city councilor also said the Liga ng mga Barangay may accommodate AWA representatives to speak in district meetings for effective information dissemination on animal care and against cruelty to animals.
A national law was already passed banning any form of cruelty to animals especially to house pets by providing penalties thereof. (PNA)
