MANILA, Oct. 5 (PNA/Xinhua) — The Philippine government said Sunday much has to be done in sports after the country’s dismal performance in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. admitted that the Aquino administration “was not happy” with the Philippine ranking in the Asian Games.
The Philippines ranked 22nd out of the 37 countries and regions that participated in the Games.
“It’s a clear indication that the Philippine Sports Commission needs to do more to further improve the performance of our athletes,” said Coloma in an interview over a state-run radio station.
He noted that the Philippines only won one gold medal.
Echoing what Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III’s earlier pronouncement, he said that it could be better to just focus the government’s resources on some sports where the country has a competitive advantage.
Coloma also urged the private sector to cooperate with the government by providing resources for sports development in the country. (PNA/Xinhua)
