BAGUIO CITY, Oct. 2 (PNA) -– The Baguio City council passed a resolution to support the quest of Vigan City to be one of the New Wonder Cities of the World which will be announced next year.
The heritage city of Vigan is the lone candidate from the Philippines along with other 27 cities contending in the search that aims to preserve the world’s man-made and natural heritage sites.
In an interview today, October 2, council committee on tourism and special events chairman councilor Elmer Datuin said Council Resolution 228 is urging Baguio City residents to vote on line, for the city of Vigan in the new seven wonder cities of the world.
Vigan City has made it to the top remaining 21 finalists of the said competition.
President Benigno Simeon Aquino III urged the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to intensify the campaign for Vigan City.
Datuin added the resolution stated a description of the city of Vigan renowned as the oldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the Philippines which was made famous by its Spanish-era houses and baroque cobblestone streets.
In 2011, Palawan’s Underground River in Puerto Prinsesa was named as one of the world’s new seven wonders of nature which boosted tourist arrivals, business opportunities and employment that placed the Philippines’ reputation as a top global tourist destination. (PNA)
