MANILA, Sept. 18 (PNA) — Malacanang on Thursday said the Aquino administration prefers to improve the justice system rather than re-imposing death penalty on heinous crime.
“Yung posisyon ng Pangulo doon sa pagbalik ng death penalty is that we have many things to do in improving the justice system in our country,” said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte in a Palace press briefing.
Valte reiterated the President’s stand amid the proposed revival of the death penalty that will give teeth to law against the criminals.
“You’ve heard of cases that have been litigated for so long and then, at the end, bigla po palang acquitted, etcetera. We’re all familiar with these stories,” she said.
“And until such time that we can achieve with absolute certainty ‘yung proseso po na pinagdadaanan nila ay pinipili po nating hindi muna ilagay sa lamesa ‘yung usapan ng death penalty,” she added.
Various sectors and groups particularly Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) are pushing for the re-imposition of death penalty amid crime incidents in the country. (PNA)
