CEBU CITY, Sept. 10 (PNA) — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has said his administration will now “aggressively pursue” the establishment of the Cebu City College for students from the city’s hinterland barangays.
Rama said he wants the school to be built in one of the city’s mountain villages.
“When we have a college in the mountain barangay, the residents there won’t have to come down to the urban area,” he said.
“Its about time we should be pursuing it with aggressiveness,” he said.
Rama said he is eyeing a city government-owned property in Barangay Bonbon where the school can be constructed.
When he was still a councilor and the chairperson of the committee on education, Rama said the city previously identified a building along Osmeña Blvd. in downtown Cebu City to house the city college but it is now used by the Central Bank of the Philippines.
Rama said he wants Councilor Gerardo Carillo to oversee and handle the project, saying the latter is very active in the implementation of the alternative learning system in the city.
“He is also active in promoting education,” Rama said.
Rama said he wants a budget for the construction of a city college included in the city’s annual budget for next year.
The city passed an ordinance establishing the city college in 2012, with an initial appropriation of P5 million for its operations.
The college will then absorb the Bachelor of Science in Nursing offered by the Cebu City Medical Center-College of Nursing in consortium with the Cebu Institute of Technology.
It will also offer courses that are recognized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. (PNA)
