CEBU CITY, Sept. 6 (PNA) — Mayor Teresa Alegado of the northern Cebu town of Consolacion has called on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 to speed up the widening of the Tayud-Consolacion-Liloan road, which connects to the P2.2 billion Cansaga Bay Bridge.
The four-lane bridge, which was inaugurated by former president Gloria Arroyo on January 24, 2010, links Mandaue City and Consolacion town.
The Tayud-Consolacion-Liloan road widening project forms part of the North Cebu Coastal Road, an alternate route from Mandaue City to Liloan town in the north which is expected to cut travel time to northern Cebu by at least half an hour.
But Alegado said the road in Tayud only has two lanes, causing a bottleneck and contributing to traffic congestion.
DPWH 7 has allotted P150 million for the expropriation of 278 lots so the roads can be widened.
Of the amount, P50 million was given to the Cebu Capitol during the time of then governor and now third district Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia.
The project has been stalled since 2009 due to road right-of-way issues and the need for additional budget.
She said the road, which once belonged to the province, was already converted into a national road over which DPWH has jurisdiction. (PNA)
