CEBU CITY, Sept. 4 (PNA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Division needs some P307 million to implement the new senior high school levels in 2016.
DepEd Cebu City Education Program Supervisor Faviolito Alberca sought the help of the Cebu City Government as they prepare to welcome the first batch of senior high school students less than two years from now.
Alberca said he and representatives from the local school board appeared in an executive session of the council Wednesday to brief them on what their agency has been doing in line with the K-12 program, which extended the basic education curriculum.
“The K-12 program will revitalize our curriculum and will produce globally competitive graduates,” Alberca said.
But before the senior high school starts, DepEd Cebu City has to construct a total of 241 classrooms, hire 395 teachers and provide 9,472 additional chairs for the students in the city.
It will also require the construction of several laboratories.
Under the senior high school curriculum, “specialized subjects” will be offered to teach not only academics, but also technical-vocational and livelihood skills, sports, arts and design.
The academic track will offer general academic; science and technology and mathematics (STEM); accounting and business management; and humanities and social sciences subjects.
The technical-vocational and livelihood tracks will offer subjects such as home economics, agriculture, fisheries and industrial arts.
Alberca said the DepEd has coordinated with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and is aligning the “core and contextualized subjects” in senior high school, to make sure that graduates will be ready for college.
DepEd has also worked with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to integrate technical, vocational and livelihood education, so that graduates of senior high school will be TESDA-eligible and ready to work. (PNA)
