ILOILO CITY, Aug. 28 (PNA) — Five new state prosecutors have been added to the roster of the Regional State Prosecutor’s Office in Western Visayas, but Regional StateProsecutor Domingo Laurea, Jr. says a huge vacuum of prosecutors remains to be unfilled.
Laurea said that considering their voluminous work, the additional five state prosecutors to the existing 94 are still not enough and they would continue to require them to work doubly hard to undo the daily backlog of cases.
Laurea said that currently, there are 200 plantilla positions waiting to be occupied, but fewcome forward to fill the vacancies, explaining that making the prosecutor’s job a career possesses the steep requirement of at least five years of law practice, a criterion which unfortunately cannot be immediately met by many lawyers.
With this predicament, Laurea said he saw no solution yet to the problem of a huge workload and predicted that his office would continue to fall behind in the expedition of cases.
Adding to their woes is the sharp rise in street crimes which according to Laurea, has weighed them down owing to their already heavy workload. (PNA)
