Cebu City prepares for APEC Summit, International Eucharistic Congress

Posted on February 5, 2014

CEBU CITY, Feb. 5 (PNA) — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the city government is now preparing for two major forthcoming events, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit next year and the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in 2016.

Cebu has been identified as one of the venues for senior ministerial meetings for the APEC Summit.

Pope Francis, on the other hand, is expected to grace the IEC which will be attended by thousands of delegates from all over the world.

The ocular team of the Office of the Director-General of 2015 APEC National Organizing Committee Wednesday paid a courtesy call to Rama.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor, Jr. said the team aims to delve into more particular issues of the hosting to synchronize the national objectives with that of the local government units.

Ambassador Ma. Angelina Sta. Catalina, deputy director-general for Conference Management and Services, will head the team accompanied by the heads of working committees tasked with the managements of all APEC meetings.

Rama said he had met with Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma last Monday and talked on the city’s role in the IEC.

He said that among others, the Cebu City government is the one responsible in manning the traffic and clearing the roads from the anticipated traffic jam on that day.

Rama said the city will also be involved in the event in the aspect of arts, culture and tourism. (PNA)
