ILOILO CITY, Dec. 10 (PNA) — Financially-bedeviled fishermen from the coastal towns of Estancia and Concepcion in Northern Iloilo, one of Central Philippines’ hardest hitareas during super-typhoon Yolanda’s onslaught last November 8, will receive monetary assistance from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Western Visayas.
Edilberto Tayao, DPWH Region 6 director, made the disclosure which was well-received by the hapless fishermen who lost their bancas, some of them motorizedoutriggers, which made life miserable for hundreds of families who depend solely on fishing.
Tayao said fishermen will each receive P15,000 as maximum aid to enable them to buy bancas. Those whose bancas sustained only minor damage will also receive cash assistance although no specific amount was mentioned by Tayao.
To help the fishermen rebuild their lives, Tayao added the DPWH is putting up bunkhouses as temporary shelters, the standard of which is a bunkhouse consisting of24 units, or rooms. (PNA)
